Forty Days of Prayer: Holy Desire
Engagement of the Heart/Affections of the Soul
Jonathan Edwards, one of America’s greatest theologians and a dominant figure in the eighteenth century “Great Awakening,” wrote that “If we are not earnest in our religion, and if our wills and inclinations are not strongly exercised, we are nothing.” He identified various “affections,” that is distinguishing qualifications that are between extreme intellectualism and extreme emotionalism, which will characterize a heart intent on God.
A day of prayer will be devoted to each of them.Saturday, April 14: Holy desire: longing and thirsting after God. I pray that first I, and then all of Emmanuel, would increasingly develop a greater desire for God.
“As the deer pants after the watering streams, so my soul pants after you, O Lord.” (Psalm 42:1-2).
“Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.” (Matt. 5:6).
“Continue seeking Him with seriousness. Unless he wanted you, you would not be wanting Him.” -C.S. Lewis, (Letters of C.S. Lewis)
