Why should we care for the environment? What is behind our longing for clean air and water, for responsible energy and agriculture practices? Join us for a panel discussion that will consider the highest motivation possible: that we are called by God to be stewards of His creation.

We're starting to prepare our sermon schedule for June through August, and so I wanted to ask for your input. The question is simply this: "What would you like to hear a sermon on?"
01-05-14
Because all of us are made in the image of God, every life is to be treated with equal dignity and worth--from the very beginning of life to its end, and every moment in-between.
12-25-13
Rejoice in Emmanuel. God with us. A Father for his children. He gives us life. He has chosen to come and live with us. Without him, we do not have life. He has made us his children.
12-22-13
God made you for himself and he sent his Son for you. We are made to worship God.

"Sometimes a light surprises the Christian while he sings..." Or sleeps. Or receives the phone call in the middle of the night. Or takes communion. Or weeps at the funeral. Or waits in the doctor's office. Or when he just watches sheep. It does not matter when or how. Be like the shepherds –quiet, terrified, amazed, humbled, obedient to a mysterious call. Bend a knee at the cradle. See the Child with awe and wonder. Be surprised by joy. Then return to your fields, forever altered, and spread the news. "...Yet God the same abiding, His praise shall tune my voice, For while in Him confiding, I cannot but rejoice. (William Cowper, 1779)

The angels of the Lord came to proclaim to us a peace that is far more real and eternal. The peace of God that comes in the birth and death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the true source of peace. Jesus indeed is our Prince of Peace and may his Peace rule in our hearts this advent season.
12-01-13
As we celebrate Jesus’ birth and the coming of Light into the world, we are aware of the darkness of sin that is still around us and we look forward to the second coming of Jesus, when all darkness will be gone and believers will walk in the light.
12-01-13
Today marks the beginning of Advent, the time that the Christian Church has historically dedicated to preparing for the adventus, or arrival, of the promised Messiah. In ancient times, an adventus meant that an important figure-a general, a king, an ambassador-was coming to one's village, and the townspeople responded by making the necessary arrangements to get their village, and themselves, ready. The act itself implies that, in fact, people were not ready and needed a time to focus. Given the frenetic schedule of the season, the pressure of getting "just the right gift," and the potential complexity of family dynamics, how much are we likewise in need of Advent! For in the words of the well-known Christmas carol, Christ comes to us anew today: "where meek souls will receive Him still the dear Christ enters in." May these devotionals break into our lives, lead us to remembrance and renewal, that we would indeed experience the presence of Christ this Christmas.
10-08-13
Emmanuel believes that God calls all churches to essentially the same three things: to help people know God, grow in community, and follow Christ. Each year we emphasize one of those three callings, with this year's focus on "following Christ." As part of that, we're in a sermon series on the gospel of Luke, as the author has a particular focus on what it means to follow Jesus in the new kingdom he's creating.
07-25-13
The VBS theme is Kingdom Rock: Where Kids Stand Strong for God. The week will be filled with Bible stories, crafts, and games, which will all be used to teach the kids the reality of God's never ending love.
05-26-13
As image bearers of God, we are called to be faithful representatives of God on earth, and the justice of God is his positive restoration of life as he intends it to be.
04-29-13
The Christian life was not meant to be lived in isolation—a kind of Jesus and me mentality—but in community. It was God’s design to make us responsible for each other and to be intricately involved in each other’s lives. Our prayer for the final two weeks will seek God’s help so that we each might fulfill our high calling to nourish and support each other.
04-15-13
“Be doers of the word, and not just hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” James 1:22 Motivated by our affections, our faith should permeate all aspects of our thoughts and actions such that our lives increasingly are characterized by being (1) prayer-filled, (2) virtuous, (3) spirit-empowered, (4) compassionate, and (5) word-centered.
04-04-13
Like a diamond with many facets, biblical community requires many complimentary elements, such as love, forgiveness, unity, hospitality, honesty, and encouragement. As we consider this theme, please pray that we would not simply be a group of people consisting of many friendships, but a community of believers whose deep relationships are made possible because of the gospel.
04-01-13
Jonathan Edwards, one of America’s greatest theologians and a dominant figure in the eighteenth century “Great Awakening,” wrote that “If we are not earnest in our religion, and if our wills and inclinations are not strongly exercised, we are nothing.” He identified various “affections,” that is distinguishing qualifications that are between extreme intellectualism and extreme emotionalism, which will characterize a heart intent on God. A day of prayer will be devoted to each of them.
03-20-13
Each Christian is admonished to “be holy because I am holy.” For the next 40 days, everyone is invited to seek the Lord daily and ask that we each, individually, and we all, as a community, will grow in holiness. The first two weeks will focus on what Jonathan Edwards called our “affections,” followed by two weeks of concentration on our actions, thoughts, and habits. The last two weeks will focus on the spiritual growth of the community of Emmanuel.
01-17-13
Why should we care for the poor and the oppressed, the widow and the orphan, for victims of human trafficking?
01-14-13
Nehemiah is more than just a great book on leadership and vision to rebuild a broken city; it's about God's work of restoring shalom, both in his people and the entire community - something we hope God will do through Emmanuel as well.
12-25-12
Rejoice in Emmanuel. God with us. A Father for his children. He gives us life. He has chosen to come and live with us. Without him, we do not have life. He has made us his children.

May this Advent season, be rich in worship and devotion to the King of Kings who has come to set us free. May you experience his coming fresh and anew.
11-05-12
Towards the close of our recent sermon series on heaven, I preached a message titled “The Return of the King.” With due apologies to J.R.R. Tolkien, the King I was referring to was Jesus Christ, and the picture of his kingdom in Revelation 21 and 22. One day, Christ will usher in his perfect kingdom, a time of true shalom: the restoration of life as God intends, in all its fullness and completeness.
09-28-12
On Sunday evening, some 30 people witnessed the first images of Mosaic Community Church, Emmanuel's first daughter church.
09-21-12
As we continue our sermon series on heaven, we'll keep returning to the importance of Jesus’ resurrection as the key to understanding everything to come.
09-13-12
This week, Emmanuel started a sermon series on heaven. Why study heaven at all? Wasn’t Hamlet correct when he called the next life, “the undiscovered country, from whose boundary no traveller returns”?

The Emmanuel MicroMission fund offers small grants to assist community groups in serving their neighbors and address local needs. The idea is for community groups or other groups of church members to use the funds to support those in their neighborhood or nearby community.

Quick: Anyone remember what was newsworthy about May 21, 2011? Actually, it was what didn't happen that was important: the predicted end of the world came . . . and went. A billboard put up on May 22 captured the thoughts of those who read their Bibles a little more closely: "That was awkward. 'No one knows the day or the hour...' Matthew 24:36"

Merciful God - as we remember how your son Jesus bore our sins in his body on the cross, how seven times he spoke, seven words of love, we ask you to bless our hearing.

Join us as we reflect during this week leading up to Good Friday and Easter.
03-31-12
Each Christian is admonished to “be holy because I am holy.” Everyone is invited to seek the Lord daily and ask that we each, individually, and we all, as a community, will grow in holiness. We will begin Easter Monday and continue for 40 days (until Ascension), praying the requests specific to that day.

Emmanuel: God with us
01-08-12
This morning, we sang, "Take my life and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee." May it be the theme for not only 2012, but our life as we seek true community.
12-18-11
The angels of the Lord came to proclaim to us a peace that is far more real and eternal. The peace of God that comes in the birth and death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the true source of peace. Jesus indeed is our Prince of Peace and may His Peace rule in our hearts this advent season.

The stage is set to maximize the dramatic. It is silent and black, there is no tension tinged expectation for there is nothing to expect besides another bland evening of repetition and the mundane. Then an interruption, a break in the dialogue the likes of which no critic could comprehend, an opening scene that leaves the audience and its actors breathless.
12-04-11
Each week of devotions and readings will center on a particular theme, related to the symbolism of the advent candle we light on Sunday in worship. The theme for the second week of advent is Bethlehem and love.
11-27-11
Each week of devotions and readings will center on a particular theme, related to the symbolism of the advent candle we light on Sunday in worship. The first candle is the Prophecy, or Hope, candle. This week, we will be reading from the promises of Isaiah, written over 700 years before the birth of Jesus, that helped the people of God anticipate the advent of the Messiah.

The instrumental music of J. S. Bach well-illustrates both God’s transcendence and His immanence.

Distance far from or near to something we're seeking can often end up being relative and fickle. God's proximity to our lives, however, is so consistently close He could touch us.
12-23-09
This is where God the artist really becomes visible. That non describable element, that knowledge known only somewhere that can’t quite be captured, is allowed into the equation.

Tis’ the season of gift giving- or gift receiving, cha ching! If you are working inside of a calendar year fiscal year, then tis’ the season for counting the coin and closing some end of year sales. It may be exhilarating to see your organization closing the year strong, or may be depressing to see it only happening to your competitors. However, whichever side you find yourself (yes, it’s that much in God’s hands), the catch with a season is that, by nature, they come and go. Seasons imply something next, that something else is coming.

The Incredulity of Saint Thomas/Caravaggio/1601 - 1602 I remember when I first studied this painting. I was in grad school, trying to create art myself. Without giving away too much information, it was during a time when imagery in contemporary culture was just beginning to really worship the down and dirty. There was still a facade in the mainstream, and most definitely in the Christian community, of only showing a superficial nice side of things.
